Alloy steels are workhorses of industry because of their economical cost, wide availability, ease of processing, and good mechanical properties. Alloy steels are generally more responsive to heat and mechanical treatments than carbon steels.

1144
: Applications include cold drawn or finished bar, cold punched nuts, split rivets, machine screws, and wood screws.
4130
: A very common general purpose grade of medium carbon, Cr-Mo steel. Flexibility afforded by heat treatment options allows it to attain a range of toughness and strength values. Good hardenability, strength, wear resistance, toughness, and ductility.
4140
: Medium-carbon steel with high hardenability and good fatigue, abrasion and impact resistance.
41L40
: Medium-carbon steel with high hardenability and good fatigue, abrasion and impact resistance. Added lead increases machinability versus straight 4140.
