Common Uses for O1 Drill Rod

O1 works especially well for smaller tools and round components that benefit from a precise starting diameter and controlled heat-treatment response.

    Punches, Pins, and Bushings

Punches, pins, and bushings are a natural fit for O1 steel rod because the round, ground starting shape is already close to the finished part. These components can be machined before hardening, then ground to final size when tighter tolerances are required.

    Blanking and Forming Tools

O1 is also used for blanking dies, forming dies, trim dies, forming rolls, die buttons, and round punch components. It is well suited to smaller tooling where a balance of toughness, wear resistance, and machinability matters.

    Gauges and Shop Fixtures

O1 tool steel rod is used for plug gauges, setting pins, locating pins, master tools, and fixture components where dimensional stability matters. These parts are often left slightly oversize before heat treatment and finished afterward to reach final tolerance.
