Carbon Steel

Carbon Steel

Carbon Steel is a steel alloy where carbon is the main alloying element. Typically, Carbon Steel contains up to 2.0% carbon by weight, along with a variety of other alloying elements, such as manganese or silicon, depending on the desired attributes and physical properties.

Carbon steel can be grouped into 3 categories: Low Carbon Steel (also known as Mild Steel), Medium Carbon Steel and High Carbon Steel. Low Carbon Steel typically contains between 0.04% to 0.30% carbon content. Medium Carbon Steel typically contains between 0.31% to 0.60% Carbon and is stronger than low carbon steel, but more difficult to form, weld and cut. High Carbon Steel (also known as Carbon Tool Steel) typically contains between 0.61% and 1.50% carbon, and is very difficult to cut, bend and weld.
