Aluminum rectangular tube is a non-ferrous metal product used in general fabrication projects that prioritize strength, without adding the weight of steel. Purchase it online or at any Metal Supermarkets location, cut to your exact specifications.

Typical Applications: Screw Machine Parts, Truck Bodies and Frames, Running Boards, Steps, Floors, Walkways, Platforms, Cover Plates, Trench Covers, Truck Runways
Typical Applications: Interior and Exterior, Construction Tube, Lawn Furniture, Luggage Racks, Air Cylinders
Aluminum rectangular tube is lightweight and hollow with either round or square corners (depending on the grade) that give it additional strength in architectural applications. To measure you need to take the outside dimensions from outer wall to outer wall (which are different sizes). If you’re interested in the inner dimensions/diameter, remember to take away the wall thickness twice.
Rectangular aluminum tubing is desired for its ability to resist corrosion, great weldability and malleability. These aluminum tubes come in several different material grades, each with distinct characteristics.
Metal Supermarkets carries several different grades of aluminum rectangular tube, including 6061 and 6063.
6061 aluminum rectangular tubing is strong, machinable and weldable (if you add filler with a different chemical composition to avoid hot cracking). This grade is also heat treatable and can be anodized or coated for additional protection, as needed. The most common applications can include transportation, structural pipe and furniture.
6063 aluminum rectangular tubing (also known as the architectural alloy) is lightweight, and offer good corrosion resistance, formability and machinability. These tubes carry a smoother surface than the 6061 variant and are usually found in interior and exterior building structures.
Is aluminum rectangular tubing stronger than steel?
In many instances, steel tubing is generally stronger and denser than aluminum tubing of the same dimensions, withstanding higher shock, impact, stress and pressure. It is easier to dent aluminum, especially if it’s thin.
But if you primarily need something lightweight and versatile, aluminum tubing can be the better choice. It is also the preferred material for cold weather circumstances – aluminum becomes stronger the lower the temperature drops.
