Aluminum Rectangular Tubing

Rectangular aluminum tubing is desired for its ability to resist corrosion, great weldability and malleability. These aluminum tubes come in several different material grades, each with distinct characteristics.

Metal Supermarkets carries several different grades of aluminum rectangular tube, including 6061 and 6063.

6061 aluminum rectangular tubing is strong, machinable and weldable (if you add filler with a different chemical composition to avoid hot cracking). This grade is also heat treatable and can be anodized or coated for additional protection, as needed. The most common applications can include transportation, structural pipe and furniture.

6063 aluminum rectangular tubing (also known as the architectural alloy) is lightweight, and offer good corrosion resistance, formability and machinability. These tubes carry a smoother surface than the 6061 variant and are usually found in interior and exterior building structures.

Is aluminum rectangular tubing stronger than steel?

In many instances, steel tubing is generally stronger and denser than aluminum tubing of the same dimensions, withstanding higher shock, impact, stress and pressure. It is easier to dent aluminum, especially if it’s thin.

But if you primarily need something lightweight and versatile, aluminum tubing can be the better choice. It is also the preferred material for cold weather circumstances – aluminum becomes stronger the lower the temperature drops.
