Aluminum Plate 7075 is a flat-shaped plate of 7075 aluminum alloy. This is one of the highest-strength aluminum alloys available, and its strength-to-weight ratio is excellent. Aluminum plate 7075 is primarily composed of aluminum, zinc, magnesium, and copper.
The alloy typically contains 1.2-2.0% magnesium, 2.1-2.9% copper, and 5.1-6.1% zinc. This unique blend makes 7075 one of the most potent aluminum alloys on the market, with a density of about 2.81 g/cm³, which is approximately one-third the density of steel.
One of the most significant characteristics of 7075 aluminum plate is its high strength. It can reach a tensile strength of up to 83,000 psi (572 MPa), rivalling that of many steels. This strength is particularly beneficial in applications such as aerospace components, where high stress and reliability are crucial. Additionally, this alloy can undergo various heat treatments to enhance its strength further, making it adaptable to different uses and requirements.
While aluminum plate 7075 does not have the same level of corrosion resistance as some other aluminum alloys, it still performs well under most environmental conditions. It can be treated with coatings such as anodizing to enhance its corrosion resistance, making it more durable and suitable for exterior use. This treatment also provides additional surface hardness and improves the aesthetic appeal of the metal.
Despite its strength, 7075 aluminum plate is relatively easy to machine, which makes it highly valued in complex component fabrication such as aerospace and automotive parts. However, its high strength can reduce its formability at room temperature. As a result, it is often machined in an annealed condition, after which it can be heat-treated to achieve the desired strength properties.
The low density of aluminum plate 7075 makes it exceptionally lightweight, which is especially beneficial in applications where reducing weight is critical, such as in the aerospace and automotive industries. By using 7075 aluminum plate, manufacturers can lower the overall weight of their products, which can lead to improved fuel efficiency and performance.
The high strength-to-weight ratio of aluminum plate 7075 provides an optimal balance between strength and mass, enabling the design of structures that are both strong and light. This ratio is particularly advantageous in sectors like aerospace, where every ounce matters, and the strength of materials cannot be compromised.
7075 aluminum plate is used in a wide range of applications. It is used in aerospace components, such as airframe structures and other high-stress parts, military applications, including missile parts, and sporting equipment, such as bicycle frames and climbing equipment. Its ability to be machined to precise specifications also makes it popular in prototyping and custom manufacturing.
While aluminum plate 7075 can be more expensive than some other aluminum alloys, its durability and longevity make it a cost-effective choice over the long term. It offers an excellent balance between performance and cost, particularly in applications where material failure would result in significant expense or safety issues.
