Plasma cutting is a method used to quickly and accurately cut steel and other metals of varying thicknesses. This process involves blowing an inert gas at high speeds and temperatures exceeding 20,000°C (36,032°F). An electrical arc is created through and around the gas, which forms plasma. The plasma generated is hot enough to cut through the metal. Common plasma gases include argon, a mixture of argon and hydrogen, and nitrogen. While air can also be used as a gas, it requires a special electrode made of hafnium or zirconium.
