See all Blog Posts How to Make Magnetic Boards Category: Hints and Tips Posted: July 17, 2014 Magnetic boards can be hung horizontally or vertically and come in all shapes and sizes. Magnetic boards have many applications but are normally used as teaching boards or notice boards. They can also be used to assist with presentations and meetings. How to Make Magnetic Boards When creating magnetic boards, the first thing you will need are Carbon Steel sheets. These sheets have magnetic properties, and will allow you to use magnets on the board. Carbon Steel sheet does come in both Hot Rolled and Cold Rolled, but for this project the Cold Rolled product should be chosen, because of its thinner thickness and superior surface finish. Once you have chosen the product, you must then determine what size is needed and the thickness of the sheet metal needed. It is recommended that the chosen thickness should not be under 0.030” (22Ga) or over 0.048” (18Ga) thick. The reason for this is that if it is too thin it can dent easily, and if it is too thick, it can weigh too much. Most people choose 0.036” (20Ga) for their project. What must be mentioned is that all Cold Rolled sheet will rust if left untreated. Therefore it is recommended that you spray paint or plate the sheet prior to use. There are products that come in Cold Rolled that are Pre-Painted in a variety of colors. However, the cost will be higher (Do not use Pre -Painted Aluminum Sheet as it does not have any magnetic properties). Finally, make sure that when you order your item you tell the provider you are making a Magnetic Board, and that you require the material to be flat and free of any surface imperfections or dents.
