Sometimes an opportunity is all someone needs to accomplish great things. That certainly can be said for the Wikwemikong High School Robotics Team.
Part of the Wikwemikong Reserve that resides on Manitoulin Island, the robotics team consists of high school students, many of whom have never been off the rural Northern Ontario island. Due to remote location and small size of the reserve, opportunities to get involved in education-based competitions are – unfortunately – few and far between.
However, thanks to community support, which now includes Metal Supermarkets GTA, the Wikwemikong Robotics Team was able to attend their first regional competition in March 2015. They did very well! Despite being up against much larger schools from all over the world with access to far more resources, the Wikwemikong Robotics Team placed in the top third of every event at the competition, taking home two of the three rookie trophies.
Their recent success and support has led to a surge of student interest, showing the students of the small high school that they can compete with any other team, despite their size. This momentum has snowballed, and Wikwemikong teacher Chris Mara says the team has seen growing community support, which has empowered the team to get involved in other robotics events.
While the Wikwemikong team may have started out as underdogs, they certainly expect big things in the future.
