In 2015, Richmond resident and owner Rob Racine first opened his Metal Supermarkets store in a modest 5,000-square-foot location near the former Diamond baseball stadium. After retiring from a career in banking, Racine was interested in opening a business in his hometown. When a franchise consultant introduced him to the Metal Supermarkets business model, Racine recognized a promising opportunity that would help local residents and businesses buy and source the metals they needed – filling a previously unmet need in Richmond. Since its opening, the store has been a vital business partner to the community, providing metal for local manufacturers, machinists, tool and die shops, military contractors, hospitals, hotels, schools, hobbyists and more. Supporting Richmond metal enthusiasts and professionals for 10 years “We are very grateful for the ongoing support of our loyal customers and the hard work of our dedicated staff,” said Racine. “Over the past 10 years, we’ve helped Richmond metal buyers find the exact metals they need for projects of every size. Celebrating this milestone with our community is truly special, and we look forward to serving our customers for years to come.” In 2024, Racine relocated the store to its current location at 711 Hospital Street to better serve the needs of its customers. With a team of seven employees, the new 10,000-square-foot location houses a larger warehouse, increased inventory and additional yard space for material storage and customer parking. Racine is also the owner of Metal Supermarkets Norfolk and Metal Supermarkets Newport News, which he opened in 2018 and 2022, respectively, following the success of his first location in Richmond. Rob Racine: Bringing a passion for world-class customer service to Metal Supermarkets Racine has been recognized within the Metal Supermarkets network for his commitment to operational excellence and customer service. In 2022, he was awarded the Bill Mair Franchisee of the Year Award at Metal Supermarkets’ annual franchisee conference, which recognized his outstanding achievement and commitment to the Metal Supermarkets business system. “I’m thrilled to congratulate Rob Racine and his experienced team on the success they have achieved in the Richmond market,” said Ryan Pryznyk, President and CEO of Metal Supermarkets. “Through his leadership and commitment to providing outstanding customer service, Rob has shown how important and essential Metal Supermarkets is to local businesses and residents.
