Metal Supermarkets created the annual scholarship in response to the shortage of skilled trade workers across North America, helping to shine a spotlight on the need for skilled trade workers. With this year’s announcement, Metal Supermarkets has awarded $30,000 since the program’s launch in 2022 to students who will become the next generation of trade industry workers. The 2024 Trade School Scholarship judging panel consisted of Metal Supermarkets corporate staff, as well as franchisees from stores in Chicago (Niles), Chicago (Bridgeview), Indianapolis, and Minneapolis (Roseville). Introducing The 2024 Metal Supermarkets Trade School Scholarship Recipients Alaina Myers – A recent high-school graduate, Alaina has participated and excelled in many high school activities while developing a passion for welding starting with courses in the ninth grade. She became the President of her school’s SkillsUSA club and led her team to a gold win in the 2022 SkillsUSA National welding competition for Welding. She will be furthering her education at Pennsylvania College of Technology. From: Hanover, Pennsylvania Academic Program: Welding & Fabrication Engineering Technology B.S. School: Pennsylvania College of Technology Alexis Brown – Recognized for her high school academic achievement awards in Texas, Alexis has been credited by her teachers as a role model for peers in addition to her involvement in organizations like Health Occupations Students of America, Future Farmers of America, and the National Technical Honor Society. Alexis wants to pursue a career in welding and inspire people to pursue their dreams while overcoming adversities they may encounter in life. She is pursuing her welding career at Texas State Technical College (Waco). From: Waxahachie, Texas Academic Program: Welding School: Texas State Technical College – Waco Miranda Crist – After spending her teens in Ohio-based construction related jobs with her father, Miranda took a high school welding course. It was during this time she developed the dream of becoming an expert welder. Her journey to Hobert Institute involved buying a camper, renovating it into a home, and driving eight hours overnight, without letting a blown tire stop her. Miranda is keen to further her welding knowledge while at Hobart Institute of Welding Technology. From: Fletcher, Ohio Academic Program: Pipefitter Pathways School: Hobart Institute of Welding Technology Wilson Williams – With an outstanding academic performance and achieving the Dean’s Honor List, Wilson actively participates within Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Instrumentation Engineering Technology Program, the Trades and Skills Construction Apprenticeship Program, Affinity Youth Leadership Council, plus Sheldon Williams Collegiate’s athletic and spirit activities. He’s an active volunteer for many local organizations including Regina Food for Learning, the Regina Food Bank, Regina High School Athletic Association, and the Buckets and Borders Project. Wilson is eager to pursue his engineering passions by attending Saskatchewan Polytechnic.
